8.1 In order to understand properly the sources of North American law, it is first necessary to appreciate that both the United States and Canada are Federal entities. In summary, this means that there are certain laws enacted by the Central Government which affect the entirety of the country and laws enacted by the constituent parts of the country, that is, the individual states of the United States and individual provinces of Canada, which only affect that state or province. Construction law as a subset of contracts law, of course, falls within this division.
