Outline of the Danish legal environment

7.1.1 The constitutional structure of Denmark

The state of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy consisting of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which together form the Danish Realm. Both Greenland and the Faroe Islands are self-governed and are represented in the Danish Parliament. The Parliament functions as a one-chamber system. The head of state (currently Queen Margrethe II) is the monarch, separated from political power or influence, but having official ceremonial duties relating to the appointment and resignation of governments. The Danish political system is based on the first Danish Constitution of 1849 as amended in 1953 and provides for the tripartition of power:
