9.1 This form of the maritime letter of indemnity is used in circumstances where the shipper, who will frequently also be the charterer of the vessel concerned, requests that the shipowner agree to discharge the goods at a different port from the discharge port identified in the bills of lading. Although used less frequently than LOIs given against discharge without production of an original bill of lading, “change of destination” LOIs are nevertheless commonly encountered in practice.
