Final Clauses

Article 87. Depositary

The Secretary-General of the United Nations is hereby designated as the depositary of this Convention.

NOTES

[87-01] Like many of the articles in the final clauses of this Convention, Article 87 owes far more to the 1978 United Nations Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea1 (the treaty embodying the Hamburg Rules, hereinafter the Hamburg Rules Convention)—in this case Article 27, which it reproduces verbatim—than to either the 1924 International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules relating to Bills of Lading2 (the treaty embodying the Hague Rules, hereinafter the Hague Rules Convention), whose depositary is Belgium,3 or to its 1968 Protocol embodying the Hague-Visby Rules4 (hereinafter the Hague-Visby Rules Protocol).
