Venezuelan government highly critical of private health insurers
The cost of private health cover in Venezuela is estimated to have risen by 70%, exceeding the limits of many policies
The Venezuelan government has raised questions over the future of private health insurance after President Chávez labelled the industry “a major perversion”. Private health insurance is used by 12% of the country’s population but insurers are concerned that the industry could be under threat, or nationalised. Private health insurance is acquired either as individual policies or group cover through employers and other organisations.
