In this chapter we consider the duties that a broker owes to his client prior to and during the placement of the insurance.1 The duties owed will depend on the nature and the extent of the instructions the broker receives from his client as well as the terms of any specific retainer or service level agreement,2 but may, in the absence of any agreement to the contrary, include the following basic duties:
