The legislative framework for international commercial arbitration in Brazil is the 1996 Federal Law, No. 9.307. The law is based upon the principles of the UNCITRAL Model Law. It also regulates recognition and enforcement of awards and provides a similar framework to that set out in the New York Convention. All arbitration awards where the seat is not Brazil are deemed to be foreign.
