RESEARCH HANDBOOK ON INTERNATIONAL INSURANCE LAW AND REGULATION. Edited by Julian Burling, Barrister, and Kevin Lazarus, Solicitor, Lloyd’s. Edward Elgar, Cheltenham (2011) lxvi and 793 pp, plus 11 pp Index. Hardback £195.
This is not your average insurance law book. It is not a detailed and comprehensive review of the law in a single jurisdiction with short analytical digressions and a third of the page taken up by footnotes, as one would usually encounter, but something completely different. This reviewer for one was not sure of the meaning of “Research Handbook”. As it turns out, a research handbook is a book containing concise, clear and condensed texts on highly specialised aspects of a fairly exclusive topic. As the editors put it in the introduction: “As the title suggests, this book is intended to be a research handbook providing further reading for those who want to look at topics more deeply and from different, more international angles” (p.xvii).
