The federal legislative framework for international commercial arbitration in Canada is the Federal Commercial Arbitration Act 1985 which came into force on 10 August 1986. By section 5 of the Act, the UNCITRAL Model Law is given force of law in Canada. Each of the provincial governments of Canada has also passed their own international arbitration statutes, which are similarly based upon the UNCITRAL Model Law.
