CHAPTER 8
Bills of lading in documentary credits
(A) Introduction
8.1 It is a standard feature of letters of credit issued for the finance of international sale of goods to call for the presentation of bills of lading. The terms of the credit set out the exact documentary requirements with which the bills of lading must conform, in addition to the requirements stipulated in Articles 20 and 22 of the ICC Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits 2007, ICC Publication No. 600 (hereafter, “UCP 600”), which deal with bills of lading and charterparty bills of lading respectively.1 Articles 20 and 22 in turn are supplemented by and to be read in conjunction with the principles contained in the International Standard Banking Practice for the Examination of Documents under UCP 600 (hereafter, “ISBP”). 2
